Feature
Lorraine is a nonchalant nurse nonplussed by the banality of day-to-day existence. Everywhere she looks, strange people are putting on strange theatrical performances, displaying a range of cartoonish, predictable emotions, all in the name of love. Or whatever. About as enthusiastic as a broken handle towards her beau, Lorraine opts to change things up by jettisoning him and finding a roommate. The unlikeliest candidate of all, aspiring model Adrian, toddles into her life with all the pink and bubbly fanfare of an overeager ingénue. Disaffected and aloof, Lorraine goes about her bored day-to-day and discovers a burgeoning interest in moonlighting as a dominatrix. Meanwhile, Adrian slowly discovers that the real world is thoroughly peppered with sleazy opportunists. Playing a bit like the anti- Reality Bites , Modern Love is Automatic is a film about being in a rut, the color turquoise, mattress sales, tight black leather, Jack Tripper-style hijinks, and transcending apathy. Melodie Sisk delivers a brilliant, understated performance that embodies the spirit (or lack thereof) of discontentment with the excessive pointlessness of modern life. Or. I don’t know. - Nicole McConvery
